Anyone with a little fade in his camo and some patches on his waders knows that killing ducks and geese is a whole lot easier when you’ve got the proper choke and load combo for your shotgun. Trouble is, plenty of us know it, but very few take the time to figure out exactly what that combination is. Which is kind of ironic, according to Carlson Choke Tubes owner Nolan May. “Bowhunters–and I am one–will shoot hundreds of arrows over the course of a summer so they’re ready for that one or two shots they’ll get all fall,” he said. “Waterfowlers, on the other hand, will shoot dozens, if not hundreds, of shots in the field in the course of a season, but the vast majority won’t take the time and spend a little money to find the right choke for their shotgun in the preseason. It’s pretty crazy.”

Already known for its all-star team of waterfowl loads, Winchester added an exciting newcomer for this fall. Last Call is a TSS load that offers unbelievable performance  where success is a requirement, not a hope. “We launched Last Call in early September and are really excited about this new choice for waterfowlers,” said Jimmy Wilson, Product Manager for Winchester Ammunition. “It’s the perfect complement to the other loads that serious hunters have embraced for years.”

No doubt, the 22 LR is the undisputed king of cartridges.

A mid-power offering in the evolutionary chain of the French sportsman/inventor Louis-Nicolas Flobert’s .22 BB Cap of 1845, the .22 Long Rifle walked a perfect line between power, recoil, noise and cost that outshined all other rimfires and is still going strong today.  Indeed, it’s estimated that roughly 2.5 billion rounds of .22 LR are manufactured each year!

WHOP! The report of a well-placed shot is a beautiful sound. Music to my ears on Kodiak Island, Land of the Giants.

The Emerald Island has an abundant population of brown bears, mountain goats, blacktail deer, and fox. The hunting history of “The Rock” is rich, filled with big tales from big adventures.   When gearing up for this journey, many thoughts run through my mind regarding safety and performance. I don’t want to be under-gunned (or should not be!) when coming face to face with a 10-foot tall hungry brown bear. A near perfect medium with calibers such as 338 Win Mag, 300 Win Mag, and 300 WSM are all great choices to consider for such an outing. The real key is finding the ammunition combo which will perform as intended.

First, figure out if your gun can handle 3.5” inch shells.  Once this has been determined, the next decision comes with cost and recoil.  With a 3.5” inch load, you will spend slightly more and also have increased recoil.  For me, I usually base it off the quantity of shooting I foresee on the hunt.  If there will be lots of shooting, I almost always go with the 3”option.  This is both for the cost and the amount of kick I can handle in one day.

Many calibers and loads have proven effective on Yukon moose, but there are factors to examine when deciding which combo to bring Northwest. It all begins if and when you knock down a brute with a well-placed shot from a .270 Win 150gr Super X bullet. You begin to break down the animal, on average taking about 7-9 trips from the kill site back to mode of transportation or base camp.  Upon returning to the carcass, you find yourself face to face with an interior grizzly who’s claimed your prize.  Shouldering your rifle at the charging bear, you take aim and place the 150grain bullet perfectly and directly into the bear’s chest inches below his chin.  The only problem, grizzly bears are tough customers. Even more so when they are hungry or have cubs to protect.

The lure of hunting sheep has an intoxication all its own…really unlike anything I hunt. Hunters will travel great distances to pursue sheep; some from all corners of the world.  As the late, great Jack O’Connor said, “Sheep sickness. There is no half way. After his first exposure, a man is either a sheep hunter or he isn't. He either falls under the spell of sheep hunting and sheep country or he won't be caught dead on another sheep mountain.”
