Protecting Beans With An Electric Fence by Grant Woods
Deer are very attracted to soybeans. Soybeans provide excellent quality forage for deer! So planting soybeans in food plots seems like an easy win win.
However, deer can damage soybeans to the point they won’t grow or produce pods during the late winter if there are a lot of deer in the area and/or the food plot size is relatively small compared to the number of deer in the area. It’s easy to protect a portion of soybeans in a food plot by using a Hot Zone electric fence. The fence is easy to install and is solar powered.

The first year I used a fence to protect beans I was shocked that a fence only two feet tall would keep deer from tasty soybeans. This video shows why the fence works. Deer almost always investigate new features with their nose. Their nose is moist so it’s a perfect conductor of electricity.
Clearly the buck in the background in this video developed a negative association with the fence and I have no doubt he won’t try to cross it to get to the beans the fence is protecting.
If you like placing stands overlooking small plots you should try using an electric fence to protect a portion of the beans till hunting season!
