A Deer Hunter's Best Friend - the Winchester Ballistic Calculator
With hunting seasons opening all around the country there are bound to be a few people scrambling to get their equipment sighted in and wondering where the summer went.
If you’re one of these people, Winchester is making it easy to determine the best ammunition decision for your setup and upcoming adventures. I’m not one to tell people not to put in their time at the range, but with Winchester’s interactive Ballistic Calculator you can actually compare and contrast loads while you’re on the go either on your web browser through their updated mobile friendly website or in the Winchester Ballistic Calculator app. The best part is the app is free and available for download on iTunes or Google Play.
For example, maybe you’ve heard all about their Deer Season XP but you haven’t gotten around to trying it for yourself. Now you can enter all your information in the app and compare it with your current ammo you’re shooting or up to four different rounds side by side.
The calculator allows you to not only pick loads, but also change the scope magnification, sight height, temperature, cross wind, elevation, sight in and target range using simple-to-use sliders. This allows you to quickly see what kind of drop you may have at various distances or how a cross wind could potentially change your shot. If you know you’re going to an area of the country with extreme high winds and long shots, this is a great way to see what ammo would be best suited for that hunt.
Once you decide on which ammo will work best for you, one of my favorite parts is the ability to print out the statistics chart so you have a quick reference that is perfectly sized and can be taped on the stock of your gun. You can even pick the range interval for all the distances shown on this chart to meet your exact needs.
Again, nothing beats putting in time at the rang. However, the Winchester Ballistic Calculator can be a huge help in the field and take the memorization of your ballistics out of the equation. It can also save money as well since you can compare and contrast various types of ammo right in the app so it can be narrowed down to the very best options for your situation.
Remember to practice and know your equipment before heading out into the field. Most importantly, know your effective range. Understand that your equipment may be able to make long shots, but knowing your own personal limitations and then sticking to it in the field is truly the only way to go.
