Shooting events for Women – Give it a Try, Ladies by Becky Yackley

If you think a weekend with guns is just for the guys, think again!  There are ladies matches, like ones run by "A girl and a Gun," "Babes with Bullets," and other organizations.

For this match, I helped my friend Cyndi get her rifle zeroed and a little practice in, then we headed to the match. First, we checked out what vendors had to offer at side stages with her mother in law Jane. Them we got Cyndi shooting a pistol for the first time since she was last at a ladies event. Then we got ready for the match with things such as loading mags and organizing gear, listening to stage briefs with the other women in our squad, and then shooting.

I’m proud of Cyndi in that she has had recent back surgery. But, I can see her strength and the sense of satisfaction she gets from shooting guns; especially since their family business involves shotguns.

Seeing women with their kids while on the range and participating in an event like this is a great thing. More women should know they can go out and do it.

At the end of the match our squad went to shoot a team side event – the smiles and laughs were plentiful. Moms, grandmothers, teenagers all enjoying challenges together.

Wrapping up the day as a community, we saw brand new shooters at this match. A young mother who shot her first major match and spent the first weekend away from her kiddos all the way to seasoned shooters who just wanted to share their love of firearms with others.

All of these women went home with experiences they can grow from, and new reasons to head back to the range with their friends.

On the road more than home, Becky has competed in 3 Gun, Bianchi pistol, service-rifle, NCAA air rifle, smallbore and air pistol around the world since 1989. For her, shooting is more than an individual sport, it is a family affair. She and family travel both near and far to spread the words of safety and shooting to both friends and strangers. Shooting should be fun – this is what Becky preaches day in and day out. The “rush” of any competition highly motivates Becky, but it is the ability to share her sport and passion that truly drive her.
